As Halloween approaches, we’ve been thinking about ways to create versatile costumes that can be worn throughout the year as part of your daily wardrobe. Here’s a list of costume ideas, matched with patterns and fabrics we have available in the shop. Remember, we offer pattern printing as well!

Characters (and homages to our beloved lost icons)

Dolly Parton in bell bottoms and a button down shirt

Dolly Parton

RIP Dolly Parton, the queen of country and the most generous heart! While she's had endless incredible looks, her classic country style makes for pieces you can wear again. Pair the Grainline Studio Archer Button Up Top in Garnet Crumple Cotton with True Bias flare-leg Isle Jeans; both are fantastic, practical options for everyday wear!

Bob Ross, Elvis, or Janis Joplin

The Isle Jeans and a chambray button-down also work for characters like Bob Ross (just add hair), Elvis (just add rhinestones), and anything 70s. Add a Joy Vest with a removable faux-fur collar, and you've got Janis Joplin!

Moira Rose

The late and beloved Catherine O'Hara's epic character from Schitt's Creek wore many incredible outfits. This one stands out for those last-minute costume scrambles. Try the Clayton Woven Shirt with the stand or frill collar options, paired with a garbage bag. (Sometimes we’re talking VERY last minute!)

Dr. Frank-N-Furter

RIP Tim Curry, who could infuse even Frank-N-Furter's lab gown with sex appeal. You too can "go up the laaaaab" in the Hope Woven Dress (pop on a thin waist tie for an easy cinch) in Eau de Nil Lawn, some pearls, and a pair of suddenly terrifying pink dishwashing gloves.

The 13th Dr. Who

Pay homage to the first-ever female incarnation of the Time Lord. Add suspenders to the Emerson Pants in Blue Organic Cotton Twill, a T-shirt you already have (or make a Gem Knit Tee), and top it off with a long line Gracie Coat in Cloud Organic Twill for the whole ensemble.

Other Versatile Pieces

The Metamorphic Dress has a hint of an otherworldly vibe, especially if you pair it with the spare fairy wings you have lying around. (No judgment, we have them too!)

If you prefer a more rugged look, try the Melrose Boiler Suit or Blanca Flight Suit. Pair it with the Herringbone Denim to be a Mechanic; White Organic Twill with patches to be a race car driver; Crumple Cotton in Olive to be a fighter pilot. Or go as a Ghostbuster, skydiver, artist - be one or be all.

The Wilder Gown and Romey Dress in slinky Recycled Satin or ethereal Cotton Lawn work for ghost/witch/bride themes and are versatile enough to layer throughout the seasons.

If you’re looking for something that requires a bit more detail work, consider making the Salma Wrap as a backdrop and adding appliqué or embroidery to create butterfly or bat wings.

Transform the Studio Tunic with fabric paint for an artist’s vibe; add some patches for Pippi Longstocking or Raggedy Ann, or just stash candy in the pockets and go as a vending machine. Maybe you’ll score some extra change!

Whether you choose to make a full costume, create one piece, or stay at home eating candy with the lights off, we hope this list helps give you some ideas for the coming weeks!
